This guy down the street was selling home grown produce in front of his house. We’ve been keeping an eye on the field during the summer. He had an old TV set on a crate in the middle of the field as a scarecrow. There were tomato plants, squash, different types of melons. And by September, he had posted signs around the block for his home grown goods. Melons, said one sign. Corn, said another, written on a white paper plate. Stopped and bought a watermelon for my father in law who enjoys watermelons.
“Hey J, let’s get some some corn also.”
Cooked up the corn after a few days.
“How’s the corn, J?”
“Not very good” as he was finishing the last of it on the cob.
Really?? Summer corn from down the street? Doesn’t get more local than that. I really wanted to like it. In my mind, it was going to be best corn ever.
“Ugh! What the heck is this? This tastes gross.”
“It’s feed corn, Peg.”
Leave it up to my husband to tell me this. Anybody else would just not eat it. All those years on grandmom’s dairy farm taught him the difference. It's feed corn.
